Built about 1760, this perfectly preserved colonial home is one of the key historical houses in Greenwich, `The Williamsburg of New Jersey.` Greenwich is one of the oldest towns in the Garden State, and was once a busy shipping and shipbuilding center. Today, it is a peaceful and friendly town where everyone knows each other. Don't be disappointed to learn that cellphone service hasn't come to Greenwich yet - you'll have to drive a mile or two out of town to get enough bars to make calls, receive texts and post photos on Facebook. Also, much to the disappointment of some visitors, the nearest beach is quite a long drive from Greenwich, and Atlantic City is a good 90 minutes away. There's not much to do in Greenwich, which is why we like it so much. Aunt Betty's restaurant is open until 2pm, and I've never actually seen a clerk at the Post Office. No snack bar, no gas station, no theater, no cafe, no rave club, no bookshop, no antique store. If you're looking for nightlife, this is the wrong place for you. Inside the front door is the Clockmaker's Shop - just the way it would have looked before the Revolution. Benjamin Reeve was a talented craftsman, and when you came to commission a clock for your home, there were lots of decisions to make before the project got underway. You could also buy maps and surveying instruments from Mr. Reeve. Past the Shop is the Library, where we keep an eclectic collection of New Jersey history books and many a volume of quaint and curious lore. Beyond that is the Kitchen and the Back Porch where you'll probably spend most of your time. Upstairs, the Master's Bedroom features a rope bed (modernized) in a size that hasn't been made since the early 1800s (it's a little narrower than a Queen). Aunt Jane's room is down the hall, next to the bathroom (tub/shower). If you're the last one into the bath in the morning, you're not likely to get as much hot water as you'd like. The third floor is divided into two parts - The Playroom (two single beds) and The War Room (two single beds). A fine place for kids to watch movies (Bose home theater system) and roughhouse. We keep a pair of jet skis in the barn, so if you have a boat endorsement on your drivers license and a tow hitch on your car, you might enjoy exploring the endless system of tidal inlets and creeks where the smugglers used to hide out. The Clockmaker's Shop is our private museum, filled with old and valuable relics of New Jersey's colonial heritage. It is a very small house, and eight guests are likely to get kind of cramped. The ideal party is three adults and four kids. There's plenty of food in the house and you're welcome to everything, including the adult beverages, at no additional charge. That's just Greenwich hospitality. A few days before your arrival, we'll send a larder inventory and a suggested shopping list. We insist that if there are guests under 18 years of age an adult must be on the premises. We will not tolerate underage drinking on the property, and if this is observed by one of our neighbors, the Cumberland County sheriff will order the premises closed ( over).
